The Guardian
Back in my early art career days I used to think that I needed to create an entirely new body of work every year. So. one year I did music, another year I did ocean, another year I did cats, and the year I created this piece it was dragons. I stopped doing different themes every year once I realized that people didn't recognize my work from year to year. But I did have fun coming up with ideas for the theme.
This piece was part of my dragon series. Originally the dragon was going to be sitting on top of a pile of treasure. I even started making a bunch of gold lamé coins. But, it wasn't quite working. I did end up making another piece with a dragon on his treasure, but not this piece. Instead, I was inspired by the castles of England. Particularly Warwick Castle since I visited there many years ago. I used an image of one of the towers as the inspiration for this piece.
The original of this has sold.
One story to tell about this piece...
I had finished the piece, but couldn't come up with a name for it. I had it hanging on my wall at an art show. When kids would come along and look at my dragon I would tell them that he needs a name. So they would give me a random name like George or Harry. When they did, I would give them one of the leftover gold lamé coins and they were very excited to get their "coin". Many years later at the same art show a woman came up to me and said, "I don't know if you remember but years ago you gave my son a coin for naming your dragon. He still has it and he took it with him when he went off to college." Wow! That just made my day.
