Starry Night - A Fiber Art Interpretation

Picture
Van Gogh's Starry Night is one of the most recognized paintings in the world. It is also my husband's favorite.
So when his birthday came around, I decided to create my own interpretation of it - not a copy, but a reimagining in my own medium. The challenge was translating Van Gogh's iconic swirling brushstrokes into the language of thread painting: tiny pieces of fabric, carefully cut and layered, then covered in dense machine stitching that blends the colors and creates texture from the surface up.

Van Gogh built his night sky with thick, expressive paint. I built mine one fragment of fabric at a time.
This piece was made as a surprise, which meant working on it in public while pretending it was something else entirely. It is one of the most personally meaningful things I have ever made. It is not for sale - it lives in our home - but it is a good example of what is possible when a piece is made with a specific person in mind.

The video below shows the progression of the piece from early in the process through to the finished work. Additional in-progress photos are shown below the video.

Interested in a custom piece inspired by a painting, a place, or a person who matters to you? Get in touch — I'd love to hear about it.

If you'd like to learn more about my work and my process, subscribe to my (sort of) monthly newsletter. I'll send you information about what I am working on and where you can view and purchase my latest creations. I promise I won't send you too many emails and I won't use your information for any other purpose.
