Telling Stories Through Fiber

I don't begin with a technique. I begin by asking what the story needs. Then I choose, or sometimes invent, the fiber art technique that will bring that story to life.

Artist • Engineer • Storyteller

Introduction

Sometimes it's a hummingbird visiting my Southern California backyard. Sometimes it's the rugged beauty of the California coast. Sometimes it's the emotion and rhythm of music. Whatever the inspiration, my goal is always the same: to discover the best way to tell that story through fiber.

Rather than limiting myself to a single medium, I work with thread painting, art quilts, fiber sculpture, needle felting, and Constructed Textiles. Each technique offers a different artistic voice, allowing the story itself to guide the creative process.

Every piece of artwork begins with a story.

Every Story Finds Its Voice

No two stories are exactly alike, and neither are the techniques I use to tell them.

Some ideas call for thousands of stitches layered together like brushstrokes. Others need the sculptural possibilities of fiber, the softness of needle-felted wool, or even textiles that I create from scratch.

Each technique has its own strengths, but they all share the same purpose: helping tell the story.

Meet Loretta

For me, art and engineering have never been opposites.

My engineering background taught me to ask questions, solve problems, and look beyond the obvious. Those same instincts continue to shape my artwork today as I experiment with materials, textures, and techniques to create pieces that invite viewers to see the world a little differently.

Stories Between the Stitches

Art doesn't happen only in the finished piece.

Sometimes the most interesting stories are hidden in the process: the unexpected discoveries, the challenges, the tiny scraps that become something beautiful, and the moments that inspire an entirely new direction.

Visit my blog, Stories Between the Stitches, for behind-the-scenes glimpses into my creative journey.
